The Ecosystem Summary

An ecosystem is all the living things that live in the same place as well as the physical environment and the relationships between them. The two components of the ecosystem are living things such as fauna and flora and the physical environment such as terrestrial or aquatic environments.

All living things are grouped into species. A population is all the living things of one species that live in an ecosystem. A community is all the populations in an ecosystem.

Species → Populations → Community

Living things depend on their physical environment to survive and have to change or adapt to their environment in order to survive. All living things need food to survive. Food chains show how living things feed on other living things in an ecosystem.

Producer (Grass) → Primary Consumers (Rabbit) → Secondary Consumers (Fox)

Food webs, on the other hand, consist of many food chains. There are other types of relationships such as mutualism, competition, commensalism, and parasitism. Mutualism is when both species benefit. Competition is when different species have the same needs. Commensalism is when one species eats the leftover food of the other. Parasitism is when one species benefits while the other suffers.
